Best Writing Advice, Ever

JA Konrath, author of the Lt. Jacqueline ‘Jack’ Daniels Series and editor of These Guns For Hire says:
The best advice I ever heard is from bestselling author David Morrell, who said: "Writing is a business. Treat it like one. As the business changes, you should too."
David Morrell, author of SCAVENGER, adds:
Writing is also an art. Rather than imitate or follow trends, we should write books that are uniquely our own. The goal is to be a first-rate version of ourselves rather than a second-rate version of another author.
Do you treat your writing as a business and/or an art?

Both. The sort of writing that brings home bread is treated as business. All creative writing is primarily art--organic in nature; you never know where it will start and where it can lead you to.

Great advices, both. :)

Formula is good if it's your own! That's my summary of the biz vs. art thing.

Yeah, definately an art. I'm not a person who likes being tied down by corporations or any type of business that tells me what to do, think, act, etc. I like being myself and my writing is a product of who I am. I understand that when I finish my novel and the time comes I'm going to have to compromise, but I love writing to much for it to be anything except an art.

More of an art than a business. I write what i want - expressing what I feel at the moment and my views of my environment. Stories that reach out of the page and touch the reader.
